The union hall was a room where working people went to become a sentence. Alone you were a word. Together you were a sentence and the sentence had a verb and the verb was demand. The hall gave the verb a room and the room gave the verb an echo and the echo traveled from the hall to the factory floor and the factory floor heard the echo and the hearing was the negotiation.

The chairs in the union hall were metal and the metal was folding and the folding was the point. The chairs folded because the room had to be something else tomorrow. The room was a meeting hall on Tuesday and a dance floor on Saturday and a polling station in November and the changing was the democracy. A room that can only be one thing is an institution. A room that can be many things is a commons. The union hall was a commons built on folding chairs and the folding was the flexibility and the flexibility was the strength.

My father worked at the Buick plant in Flint for forty years. He walked into the union hall at Local 599 every month and the walking in was the citizenship. The citizenship was not given. The citizenship was maintained. You maintained it by showing up and the showing up was the dues and the dues were not just money. The dues were presence. The body in the chair was the vote and the vote was counted by looking around the room and the looking was the tally.

The podium in the union hall was wooden and the wood was scarred from fists. The fists were not violent. The fists were punctuation. A man stood at the podium and said the company wants to cut the third shift and the saying was information and then the fist came down on the wood and the coming down was the period at the end of the sentence. The sentence said we will not allow this. The period said I mean it. The podium absorbed the fist the way the hall absorbed the anger and the absorbing was the architecture's purpose. The hall was built to contain fury and convert it into language and the converting was civilization.

The bulletin board in the union hall was the internet before the internet. The board had flyers and the flyers were pinned and the pinning was publication. A man typed a grievance on a typewriter and pinned it to the board and the pinning was the posting and the posting was public and the public was forty-seven men who read the board before the meeting started. The forty-seven men were the audience and the audience was sufficient. You did not need a million readers. You needed forty-seven readers who worked in the same building and carried the same grievance in their lunch pails and the carrying was solidarity.

The coffee in the union hall was the worst coffee in America and the worst was the bond. The coffee was made in a percolator that had not been cleaned since the Eisenhower administration and the not cleaning was tradition. The tradition said this coffee is terrible and the terrible is ours and the ours is what matters. You drank the coffee because the drinking was participation. A man who would not drink the coffee was a man who thought he was better than the room and the room did not tolerate better. The room tolerated equal. The equal was the coffee. The coffee was the sacrament.

The union hall is not gone but the union hall that was a gathering place is gone because the gathering required a grievance and the grievance required a factory and the factory left town. The factory went to a place where the labor was cheaper and the cheaper eliminated the grievance and the eliminating was the strategy. You do not need a union hall when there is no union. You do not need a commons when there is no common employer. The chairs are still in the hall. The chairs still fold. The room can still be a dance floor on Saturday. But the Tuesday meeting is thinner now and the thinner is the measure and the measure says something left this room that the chairs cannot replace. The verb is still demand. The sentence is shorter. The echo does not reach the factory floor because the factory floor is in another country and the another country does not have a union hall and the not having is the design.
