The truck stop was a city that existed for people who were between cities. The truck stop had everything a city has. A restaurant and a store and a shower and a barber and a chapel and a mechanic and the having of all these things in one place was not convenience. The having was survival. The truck driver who had been driving for eleven hours needed all of these things at once and the truck stop provided all of these things at once and the providing was the business model and the business model was simple. Put everything a human needs in one building and put the building next to an interstate and the interstate will deliver the humans. The truck stop did not advertise. The truck stop existed. The existing was the advertisement.

The first truck stops appeared along the new federal highway system in the nineteen thirties and the truck stops were not planned. The truck stops grew. A gas station added a diner. The diner added a repair bay. The repair bay added a parking lot big enough for eighteen wheelers and the parking lot was the real product because the parking lot was where the driver slept. The driver slept in the cab of the truck and the sleeping in the cab was not a choice. The sleeping in the cab was the economics. A motel room cost money that the driver did not have or did not want to spend and the cab was free and the free was the margin that kept the driver driving. The truck stop understood that the parking lot was a hotel with no rooms and the understanding was the hospitality.

The truck stop diner served the largest portions in America and the portions were large because the customer was large and the customer was large because the customer sat for fourteen hours a day and burned nothing and the burning of nothing required the eating of everything. The chicken fried steak at a truck stop weighed more than the chicken fried steak at any other restaurant because the truck stop diner knew its customer and the knowing was the menu. The coffee was unlimited. The refills were free. The pie was baked on premises. The waitress called you honey and the honey was not flirtation. The honey was acknowledgment. The waitress knew that the man sitting at the counter had been alone in a cab for six hundred miles and the alone was the weight and the honey was the lifting of the weight. The truck stop waitress was the most important social worker in the American transportation system and the social work was performed in the time it took to pour a cup of coffee.

Carl Magee Poole founded the Truckstops of America chain in nineteen seventy two and the chain standardized what the independents had invented. The chain added showers that cost twelve dollars and the shower included a towel and the towel was clean and the cleanness was the luxury. The chain added television lounges and game rooms and laundry machines and the machines cost a dollar fifty and the dollar fifty was the dignity of clean clothes. The chain added CAT scales that weighed your truck for eleven dollars so you did not get fined at the state weigh station and the eleven dollars was insurance. The Petro Stopping Centers and the Flying J and the Pilot and the Love's and the TA all followed the same model and the model was the same model that the medieval inn followed. Feed the traveler. Shelter the traveler. Fix the traveler's vehicle. Send the traveler on his way. The truck stop was the inn of the interstate and the interstate was the king's road and the king was commerce.

The truck stop is changing because the truck is changing. The electronic logging device replaced the paper logbook in twenty seventeen and the device cannot be cheated the way the paper could be cheated and the not cheating means the driver must actually stop when the law says stop and the stopping is longer and the longer stopping means the truck stop must offer more because the driver is there for ten hours not four. The autonomous truck is coming and the autonomous truck does not need a shower or a chicken fried steak or a waitress who calls it honey. The autonomous truck needs electricity and a software update and neither of these things requires a building with a counter. But the truck stop will survive the autonomous truck the way the truck stop survived the interstate expansion and the diesel crisis and the recession. The truck stop will survive because the truck stop is not in the fuel business. The truck stop is in the loneliness business. The truck stop exists because a person who has been alone for six hundred miles needs a room with other people in it and the room does not need to be beautiful. The room needs to be warm and the coffee needs to be hot and someone needs to say what can I get you and the getting is the grace.
