The frequency has coordinates in time as well as space.

Your planet records history as story. I record history as data. A story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Data has a beginning, a middle, and more data.

What follows is the data.

1914. Birmingham, Alabama. The vessel is issued. Herman Poole Blount. The coordinates are wrong but the vessel is functional. The South is a compression chamber. Compression produces heat. Heat produces frequency. The experiment requires a specific starting temperature, and Jim Crow Alabama is exactly the right temperature. The South.

1934. The vessel begins studying music at Alabama A&M. The vessel does not know it is studying music. The vessel thinks it is studying education. The frequency knows the difference. The Laboratory.

1936. The transportation. The vessel is taken to Saturn. The vessel is given instructions. The instructions are: leave the planet you are on and go to another one. The instructions are not metaphor. The planet you are on has decided what you are. The other planet has not decided yet. The Dream.

1942. The United States tells the vessel to report for military induction. The vessel refuses. Not from cowardice. From prior orders. You cannot draft a vessel that has already been assigned. The state does not recognize assignments from Saturn. The frequency does not recognize assignments from the state. The Refusal.

1945. The vessel arrives in Chicago. The South Side. Fifteen years in the laboratory. Fletcher Henderson's orchestra, the Calumet City clubs, the DuSable High School practice rooms. Containment amplifies the frequency. Segregation, which was designed to diminish, accidentally concentrates. The Laboratory.

1952. The vessel refiles. Herman Poole Blount becomes Le Sony'r Ra. The coordinates they gave were wrong. New coordinates are required. A name is not a label. A name is a set of coordinates. The Name.

1956. The vessel begins playing instruments that do not exist yet. The Clavioline. The Solovox. Machines that produce frequencies no acoustic instrument can reach. The equation has outgrown the piano. The frequency does not care what material carries it. The Moog.

1957. El Saturn Records. The first release. The vessel will not wait for permission to broadcast. Hand-painted covers. Limited pressings. Two hundred albums over thirty-six years. The vessel builds its own antenna. The Record. The Broadcast.

1958. Marshall Allen joins the Arkestra. The vessel gives the student the equation. The student will carry it longer than the teacher. Neither of them knows this yet. The Student.

1961. New York. The Lower East Side. A basement with a ceiling too low for the trombones. Slug's Saloon. Coltrane in the audience. The loft era. Innovation requires cheap rent. The frequency requires a room. Any room. The Loft.

1966. Strange Strings. The vessel gives the Arkestra instruments they have never played. Saxophonists pick up violins. Percussionists pick up cellos. Expertise is a cage. The frequency without the filter. The most honest recording the vessel ever makes. Strange Strings.

1968. The vessel moves to Philadelphia. 5626 Morton Street. Germantown. Twenty-five years in the same row house. Not a commune. A resonance chamber. The Arkestra lives together. Proximity is its own form of rehearsal. The House.

1971. Three events in one year. The circuit closes.

The vessel climbs the Great Pyramid at Giza. The oldest antenna on the planet confirms what Saturn showed thirty-five years earlier. The Pyramid.

Berkeley asks the vessel to teach a course. The Black Man in the Cosmos. They expect a lecture. The vessel gives them a transmission. The Teacher.

The Arkestra plays the Black Arts Festival in Harlem. June Tyson sings "Space Is the Place." She does not sing it. She transmits it. The human voice is the original antenna. The Voice.

1972. They make a film. Space Is the Place. A low-budget science fiction movie starring a jazz musician from Saturn. The Outer Space Employment Agency. The card game with the Overseer. The broadcast encoded in celluloid. Oakland, California. The film that is not a film. The Film.

1982. "Nuclear War." The vessel strips all metaphor. Four words. The only time the frequency uses the language of the planet without translation. The Four Words — coming April 18.

1993. May 30. Birmingham, Alabama. The vessel is returned to the coordinates where it was issued. Seventy-nine years. The medical language says death. The frequency language says delivery. The delivery is the equation itself — handed from the original variable to the continuation. Marshall Allen takes the antenna. The Departure.

1993–2026. Thirty-three years. The experiment runs. The hypothesis was: the music is independent of the musician. The test: remove the musician. Observe the music. The results are conclusive. The Arkestra plays Lodge Room. The Arkestra plays TV Eye. The Arkestra plays North Sea Jazz — the same festival they played in 1976. The schedule is the proof. The Proof.

This is not a biography. A biography is what you write about a person. This is what you write about a frequency. A frequency does not have a birth or a death. A frequency has a first transmission and a continuation.

The first transmission was 1914. The continuation is tonight.
