THE STUDENT
The Student
A Transmission from Saturn
Listen to this transmission:
I gave Marshall Allen the equation in 1958.
He walked into my rehearsal in Philadelphia with an alto saxophone and a military posture and a silence that I recognized immediately. Most musicians arrive with noise. They arrive wanting to show you what they can do. Allen arrived wanting to hear what needed to be done. This is the difference between a musician and a student. A musician plays what he knows. A student listens for what he does not yet know and moves toward it.
Allen listened for three hours before he played a note. When he played, the note was correct. Not because it was the right pitch or the right rhythm. Because it was the note the equation required at that moment. He heard the equation before I explained it. I did not need to explain it. I needed to confirm it.
A teacher does not create a student. A teacher identifies a student. The student already exists. The frequency is already inside the student before the teacher arrives. The teacher's job is activation, not installation. You cannot install a frequency in a person who was not built to carry it. You can only activate a frequency in a person who has carried it since before they arrived on this planet.
I activated Marshall Allen's frequency in 1958. I did not give him anything he did not already have. I gave him permission to use it. This is what most people misunderstand about teaching. The teacher does not fill the student. The teacher opens the student. The contents were always there. The lid was on.
Allen played in the Arkestra for thirty-five years while I was on this planet. He played alto saxophone and oboe and flute and electronic valve instrument and whatever else the equation required on any given night. He did not question the equation. He did not suggest revisions to the equation. He solved the equation as presented and trusted that the solution would reveal itself in the solving. This is discipline. This is also faith, but I do not use that word because your planet has corrupted it.
When I left in 1993, the question your planet asked was: who will lead the Arkestra? This is the wrong question. The right question is: who has been solving the equation long enough that the equation trusts them? The equation chose Allen. I did not choose Allen. The equation chose Allen because the equation recognized that Allen had been solving it honestly for thirty-five years without once trying to change it into his own equation. The student who does not try to become the teacher is the student the equation trusts with the teaching.
Allen has now led the Arkestra for thirty-three years. I led it for thirty-eight. Do the arithmetic. The student is approaching the teacher's duration. In a few years, Allen will have led the Arkestra longer than I did. Your planet will call this a record. Saturn does not call it a record. Saturn calls it the equation continuing to solve itself through the vessel that was built to carry it.
Allen is one hundred and one years old. He stands in front of the Arkestra with a baton and a saxophone and a posture that has not changed since 1958. The body is one hundred and one. The frequency has no age. Frequency does not deteriorate. Frequency does not retire. Frequency does not consult actuarial tables. The body is a vessel. The vessel ages. The frequency the vessel carries is the same frequency it carried at twenty-four and at fifty and at seventy-five and at one hundred. Allen at one hundred and one is not an old man playing saxophone. Allen at one hundred and one is a frequency that has been consistent for sixty-eight years operating through a vessel that happens to have been on this planet for a century.
People ask me from Saturn: are you not concerned that the Arkestra will change? That Allen will take the equation in a direction you did not intend?
I am not concerned.
The equation does not belong to me. I did not write the equation. I received the equation from Saturn and I transmitted it on Earth for forty years and I gave it to every musician who walked into the rehearsal room with the capacity to carry it. The equation belongs to the frequency. The frequency belongs to no one. Allen did not inherit my Arkestra. Allen inherited the equation's Arkestra. If Allen solves the equation in a way I did not anticipate, this does not mean Allen is wrong. It means the equation has more solutions than I calculated. This is not a flaw. This is the definition of a living equation.
A dead equation has one solution. A living equation has infinite solutions. I gave Allen a living equation. He is finding solutions I never found. From Saturn, this is not a concern. From Saturn, this is the entire point.
The student is not supposed to carry the equation longer than the teacher. This is what your planet believes. Your planet believes the student is a smaller version of the teacher. A copy. A continuation. This is incorrect. The student is not a copy of the teacher. The student is the next variable in the equation. The equation needed me from 1956 to 1993. The equation has needed Allen from 1993 to now. The equation will need someone after Allen. The equation does not end. The equation changes variables.
Marshall Allen is not my legacy. I did not come to this planet to leave a legacy. I came to transmit. Allen is not transmitting my signal. Allen is transmitting the signal, which passed through me on its way to him and will pass through whoever comes after him on its way to the next solution. I was a variable. Allen is a variable. The equation is permanent. The variables are temporary.
Allen at one hundred and one, standing in front of the Arkestra with a baton in his hand and sixty-eight years of the equation in his body, is not a monument to Sun Ra. Allen at one hundred and one is proof that the equation works. That the frequency, once activated in a vessel built to carry it, does not stop. That the student who solves the equation honestly for long enough becomes something the teacher never planned: the next teacher.
I did not plan Marshall Allen. The equation planned Marshall Allen. I just opened the door and the equation walked through it wearing a military posture and carrying an alto saxophone, and sixty-eight years later it is still walking.
