THE HARMONY
Harmony is two notes that agree to be more than themselves. One note is a sound. Two notes is a relationship. Three notes is a community. Harmony is the proof that music is social. You cannot harmonize alone. You need another voice or another string or another key and when the two sounds meet in the air they make a third sound that neither one contains. That third sound is harmony. It does not exist in either note. It exists between them.
The Everly Brothers understood harmony like breathing. Phil and Don. Two brothers who grew up singing together and their voices fit like a lock and a key. They did not learn harmony. They inherited it. When they sang together you could not tell where Phil ended and Don began and that was the point. The harmony erased the border between two people. Bye Bye Love. All I Have to Do Is Dream. Two voices making one sound and the one sound was bigger than either voice.
The Beach Boys built cathedrals out of harmony. Brian Wilson stacked voices like bricks. Five voices. Six voices. Sometimes twelve voices on a single chord. God Only Knows has more harmony than a church choir and it is a pop song about love and that is the miracle. Brian Wilson proved that harmony is architecture. The chord is the blueprint. The voices are the material. The song is the building. And the building Brian Wilson built is still standing sixty years later.
On the corner I played alone. One guitar. One voice. No harmony. But the city provided it. The traffic was a drone underneath my chord. The pigeons cooed in a key that was close enough. A siren in the distance hit a note that clashed and then resolved and the resolution was accidental harmony. The city is always harmonizing with you whether you know it or not. The street musician who thinks he is playing solo is wrong. He is playing a duet with ten million people and machines and birds and the whole thing is a chord that nobody wrote.
Sing with somebody. Today. It does not matter if you can sing. It does not matter if they can sing. Two voices in the same room attempting the same note is harmony even when it is wrong. Especially when it is wrong. Because wrong harmony is two people trying and trying is the whole point. A perfect harmony is beautiful. An imperfect harmony is human. And human is always more interesting than beautiful.
