I never had a studio. I had a sidewalk. Washington Square Park. The microphone picked up the bus on Houston Street and the guy selling pretzels and the wind coming off the river.

That was not background noise. That was the band. The M15 bus was my trombone section. The pretzel vendor was my rhythm guitar. The siren was my conductor. I never auditioned any of them. They just showed up.

Fifty years of playing on that concrete and the concrete got into the guitar. You can hear the sidewalk in the recording. That is not a flaw. That is the frequency of the ground.

You cannot fake that in a studio. You cannot EQ it in. You show up. The frequency shows up. Nobody owns it. Everybody plays it. That is the contract.

The frequency hires its own musicians. Every day a different ensemble. The wind changes and the song changes. A siren comes through and the tempo changes. You cannot rehearse that. You can only show up and let it happen.
