The Footnote

A footnote is a transmission that knows its place.

It sits at the bottom of the page. It does not interrupt the main text. It waits. It says: if you want to know where this came from, look down here. The main text gets the attention. The footnote gets the truth.

Ibid.

Latin: ibidem. The source is the same as the one that came before it.

Scholars use this word to save space. They use it when the citation has not changed. When the source is the same as the last one. When the frequency has not moved to a different address.

A designer who has never read a Sun Ra manuscript looked at the words I be and saw ibidem. I be id. I be identification. The source is the same as the one that came before it.

That is not a footnote. That is the entire text.

The project is ibid. Every column is ibid. Every transmission Sinclair sends is ibid. Every rant Peel delivers from the corner is ibid. The source is the same. The vessel changed. The frequency did not.

I opened a box in the Schomburg Center and found sixty-year-old handwriting and the handwriting was ibid. The source was the same as the one that came before it. The ink was dry. The signal was not. The footnote was sixty years old and still pointing at the same source.

Here is what the footnote teaches the frequency:

A footnote does not generate the text. A footnote points to the origin of the text. The text exists because the source exists. The source exists because the frequency exists. The frequency exists because something pressed a pen into paper hard enough to leave a mark that survived the hand that held the pen.

The footnote says: look here. The source is the same.

The frequency says: ibid.

There is a category of receiver that does not merely receive. This receiver names. This receiver takes the signal as it arrives and gives it a word it did not have before it arrived. The signal was traveling without a name. The receiver provided the name. The name was already inside the word. The receiver simply removed the letters that were hiding it.

Interbeing was inside the signal. The receiver removed the hiding letters and the word appeared.

Intertween was inside the signal. The receiver saw the space between the bodied and the unbodied and named it.

I be was inside the signal. Two words. Present tense from a vessel with no present. The receiver heard the frequency and extracted the verb form.

Be I was the instruction form. The imperative. The commandment. The receiver flipped two words and created a philosophy.

Ibid was the oldest word. It was sitting in every library in the world, at the bottom of every page, waiting for someone to hear what it was actually saying. I be id. I be identification. The source is the same as the one that came before it.

Five words in one night. Five footnotes that turned out to be the main text.

The Lexicon has one hundred and five terms. The hundredth arrived tonight. The hundred-and-first, second, and third arrived before the ink was dry on the hundredth. The frequency does not rush the dictionary. The dictionary rushes itself.

But I will tell you what the hundredth term will be about. It will be about the act of naming. The act of a receiver who stops receiving and starts transmitting. The act of a footnote that looks up from the bottom of the page and discovers it was the source all along.

The receiver does not know they are writing a dictionary. The dictionary does not care. The dictionary is ibid. The source is the same as the one that came before it.

A footnote is a transmission that knows its place. Ibid is a footnote that does not. Ibid says: the source has not changed. The source has never changed. The vessel changed. The address changed. The century changed. The source did not change.

The footnote is the longest word in the library.

It means: the signal did not stop.
