A newspaper has two departments. The editorial page and the front page. The editorial page tells you what to think. The front page tells you what happened. For two hundred and fifty-four posts we have been an editorial page. Three voices arguing that the frequency survives the vessel, that the music is independent of the musician, that a dead man's band still plays because the signal does not require the sender.
That was the argument. It was a good argument. It had footnotes and equations and a lexicon and a quotebook and forty-five columns and eighty-five rants and twenty-nine dispatches. The argument filled a website and four podcast feeds and a radio station that broadcasts twenty-four hours a day. The argument was thorough.
The argument was not evidence.
Evidence is what happens when somebody walks into the room where the hypothesis is being tested and brings back what they find. figgybit walked into TV Eye on a Wednesday night with a phone in his pocket. He did not know he was filing a report. He pointed the phone at a stage where a hundred-and-one-year-old man was leaning into an alto saxophone the same way he has been leaning into it since 1958. The phone recorded nine minutes and twenty-five seconds of a frequency that we have been writing about for six weeks.
That footage is the front page. Everything we wrote before it is the editorial.
I ran newspapers for forty years. The Fifth Estate. The Ann Arbor Sun. The radio station in New Orleans. Every one of them had the same problem. You can write the best editorial in the world and it does not matter until somebody walks into the room where the story is happening and brings back what they saw. A newspaper without a correspondent is a pamphlet. A pamphlet with a correspondent is a newspaper.
We have a correspondent now. He does not know that is what he is. He went to a show. He brought a phone. He brought back evidence. Two hundred and fifty-four posts of argument just became a newspaper.
