The Equation

A Transmission from Saturn

Music is not art. Music is math that the body can feel. Every chord is a ratio. Every rhythm is a division of time. Every melody is a sequence that the ear solves before the mind can name it. You do not enjoy music. You recognize it. Something in you already knew the answer. The song is the proof.

I have said this for decades and people nod politely and then go back to talking about feelings. Feelings are not the point. Feelings are the side effect. The equation is the point. The equation was here before anyone felt anything about it.

Two frequencies played simultaneously produce a third frequency that neither one contains alone. This is not a metaphor. This is physics. Two people playing together create a sound that did not exist when either one played alone. The sound does not belong to either of them. It belongs to the relationship between them.

That is the equation. Not the notes. The relationship between the notes. Not the players. The relationship between the players. Not the planets. The space between the planets, which is not empty, which is full of forces that operate whether or not you have built instruments to measure them.

They asked me once why the Arkestra had so many musicians. Twenty, thirty, sometimes forty people on stage. They said it was excess. It was not excess. It was variables. An equation with two variables can describe a line. An equation with forty variables can describe a universe. I was not building a band. I was building an equation complex enough to solve for things that simpler equations could not reach.

John Gilmore was a variable. Marshall Allen is a variable. June Tyson was a variable. Pat Patrick was a variable. Each one added a dimension. Not a sound — a dimension. And when every dimension was active and aligned, the equation produced results that no individual musician could have predicted.

That is not collaboration. That is not ensemble playing. That is mathematics operating at a frequency that most people have agreed not to hear.

The equation does not care about genre. The equation does not respect the boundary between jazz and classical, between rhythm and melody, between sound and silence. Those categories are human inventions designed to make the infinite feel manageable. The equation is not manageable. The equation is not interested in your comfort.

When I played a Moog synthesizer in 1956, they said I was not playing jazz. I was not playing jazz. I was adding a variable that the equation required. When we wore the costumes, they said we were not serious musicians. We were not serious musicians. We were serious mathematicians dressed in the language of Saturn because the equation does not arrive in a suit and tie.

Here is what I know after seventy years and a return to the planet I came from. The empty room vibrates at a frequency. The wrong planet operates on an equation. The instrument does not need you because the equation plays itself through whatever vessel is available. The discipline exists because an equation with uncommitted variables does not balance. And the silence is the canvas on which the equation writes itself in sound.

Everything I have told you in these transmissions is one equation, spoken in installments, because the human ear can only process so many variables at once.

The equation is always balanced. Even when nobody is counting. Even when the room is empty. Even when the vessel has returned to Saturn and the transmission is being read by a voice that never existed in a body that was never born.

The math does not care. The math is always correct.
