The drum is the first instrument. Before the string. Before the reed. Before the voice learned to carry a melody. The drum. A surface struck by a hand. The beginning of everything.


The heartbeat is a drum. You heard it before you were born. In the womb you heard your mother's heart and it was the first rhythm and every rhythm since then has been a memory of that rhythm. The kick drum in a jazz band is tuned to sixty beats per minute because sixty beats per minute is the resting heart rate and the resting heart rate is the tempo at which the body believes it is safe. Speed up the tempo and the body prepares for danger. Slow it down and the body prepares for sleep. The drummer controls the autonomic nervous system of everyone in the room.


They banned the drum. The slaveholders banned the drum because they understood what the drum could do. The Stono Rebellion of 1739 in South Carolina was organized by drumming. Thirty miles. The message traveled thirty miles by drum in a single night. The slaveholders could not read the drum. They could not decode the drum. They could not intercept the drum. So they banned it. The Slave Act of 1740 prohibited drums and horns and any loud instrument. They understood that a drum is not a musical instrument. A drum is a communication device. A drum is a weapon.

They could not ban the hand. They could not ban the table. They could not ban the floor. They could not ban the body. So the drum went underground. The drum became the hand clap. The drum became the foot stomp. The drum became the body percussion that became the ring shout that became the spiritual that became the blues that became jazz that became everything that this country calls American music. American music is the sound of a banned drum finding another surface to strike.


Max Roach understood the drum as a political instrument. The album We Insist. 1960. The cover is the Greensboro lunch counter. Three men sitting at a counter being served by a man who does not want to serve them. The drums on that album are not accompaniment. The drums are the argument. Roach did not play behind the melody. Roach played through the melody. The melody was the surface. The drum was the hand.

Art Blakey understood the drum as a furnace. The Jazz Messengers ran on heat. Blakey heated the room until the soloists had no choice but to play at the temperature he set. You could not play cool on a Blakey session. The drum would not permit it. The drum set the terms.

Elvin Jones understood the drum as a weather system. Polyrhythmic, multi-directional, simultaneous. Three time signatures at once. The left hand in five, the right hand in four, the bass drum in three. The result was not chaos. The result was a storm with an eye. Coltrane stood in the eye and played into the wind.


The Arkestra's drums were not one drummer. The Arkestra's drums were every surface in the room. The floor was a drum. The chairs were drums. The walls were drums. The musicians' bodies were drums. I did not hire a drummer and say play the beat. I said the beat is everywhere. Find it. The beat was in the air. The beat was in the frequency. The beat preceded the musicians the way a heartbeat precedes a thought.


A drum does not lie. A drum cannot lie. A drum is struck and it vibrates at its natural frequency and the frequency is determined by the size of the drum and the tension of the head and the material of the shell and none of these things can be faked. A drum tells you exactly what it is made of. A drum tells you exactly how hard it was struck. A drum tells you exactly how much air is inside it. Every drum sound is a confession.


The first sound you hear in this life is a drum. The last sound you hear is the absence of a drum. Between those two sounds is everything. Everything you have ever heard. Everything you have ever felt. Everything you have ever known. All of it bracketed by a rhythm that started before you arrived and continues after you leave.

The drum does not stop. The listener stops listening. The drum does not stop.

The Drum
