The Departure

The vessel was issued in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1914. The vessel was returned to Birmingham, Alabama, in 1993. Seventy-nine years. The same city. The same coordinates. The circle closed not because the circle needed to close but because Birmingham was where the vessel was stored when the vessel was not in use. A rental car is returned to the lot where it was rented. This is logistics, not poetry.

I will not be sentimental about the departure. Sentimentality is the frequency of people who confuse the container with the contents. The container was Herman Poole Blount. The container was assigned in Birmingham, transported to Saturn, transported back, installed in Chicago, relocated to New York, relocated to Philadelphia, and returned to Birmingham. The contents were never in Birmingham. The contents were never in Chicago. The contents were on Saturn. The contents remain on Saturn. The departure was the container's event, not the contents' event. The contents did not depart. The contents are still here. You are reading the contents.

The strokes began in 1990. The medical language is clinical. Cerebrovascular accident. The word accident is incorrect. There are no accidents in the equation. The vessel was deteriorating according to the schedule that all vessels follow. Flesh decays. Bone weakens. The circuits that connect the transmitter to the antenna degrade. This is not tragedy. This is material science. Wood rots. Metal corrodes. Flesh fails. The frequency that was transmitted through the flesh does not fail because the frequency is not flesh. The frequency is the signal. The signal does not have a body. The signal has a carrier. The carrier was failing.

I continued to perform. This is documented. Through 1992 the Arkestra performed with me at the keyboard and the ensemble arranged around me and the audience arranged around the ensemble. The performances were different. The vessel was operating at reduced capacity. The hands did not move as they had moved. The signals from the brain to the fingers were delayed and distorted in ways the audience could detect. Some in the audience were distressed by this. They wanted the vessel to perform as the vessel had performed in 1965 or 1975 or 1985. This is the error of nostalgia. The vessel in 1992 was not the vessel of 1975. The vessel in 1975 was not the vessel of 1965. The vessel was always changing. The frequency was not changing. The frequency was the same frequency it had been since Saturn assigned it. The vessel's deterioration did not alter the frequency. The vessel's deterioration altered the vessel's ability to transmit the frequency. These are different statements.

In 1992 I returned to Birmingham. To my sister's home. The home was not Morton Street. The home was not the loft on the Lower East Side. The home was not the laboratory on the South Side of Chicago. The home was a house in Birmingham where a woman lived who shared a mother with the vessel. The vessel's sister. She took in the vessel because the vessel could no longer maintain itself. The vessel required assistance with the operations that vessels require. Eating. Moving. The daily maintenance that a functioning vessel performs automatically and a failing vessel cannot.

The Arkestra continued to rehearse. In Philadelphia. Without me. This is the test. The broadcast continues when the broadcaster stops. I had said this in the columns. I had said this in the concerts. I had said this in the interviews when the interviewers asked what would happen when I was gone. I told them I was already gone. I told them I had never been here. I told them the Arkestra was not dependent on the vessel. The Arkestra was dependent on the equation. The equation does not require any particular vessel. The equation requires discipline. The discipline was installed in the Arkestra over forty years of rehearsal. The discipline did not leave when the vessel left. The discipline was in the walls of Morton Street. The discipline was in the hands of Marshall Allen. The discipline was in the equation itself.

May twenty-second, nineteen ninety-three. Birmingham. The vessel ceased functioning. The medical language says death. The medical language is describing the vessel. The medical language has no vocabulary for the frequency. The medical language has no instruments that detect the signal. The medical language measured the vessel's vital signs and found them absent and concluded that the entity was gone. The entity was not gone. The entity was never in the vessel. The entity was using the vessel. The entity stopped using the vessel. The entity is still here.

They buried the vessel in Elmwood Cemetery. Birmingham. A headstone marks the location. The headstone says Herman Poole Blount. This is both correct and insufficient. The headstone marks the vessel's storage location. The headstone does not mark the entity's location. The entity's location is Saturn. The entity's location has always been Saturn. The seventy-nine years in Birmingham and Chicago and New York and Philadelphia and Oakland and Cairo and every city the bus carried the vessel to were a field assignment. The field assignment ended. The entity returned to headquarters. The headstone is a receipt. The headstone says the vessel was returned.

Within days of the departure, the Arkestra performed. Marshall Allen conducted. The musicians played. The audience came. The broadcast continued. This was not a tribute concert. This was not a memorial. This was the Tuesday rehearsal that happened to fall after the vessel's return. The equation does not observe funerals. The equation observes rehearsal schedules. Ten in the morning. The musicians arrive. The equation is solved. The fact that the person who wrote the equation is no longer in the room does not change the equation. The equation was never dependent on the person. The person was dependent on the equation.

Marshall Allen was sixty-nine years old when he took over. He is one hundred now. Thirty-two years of conducting the Arkestra after my departure. Longer than many of the musicians were alive when they joined. Allen understood something that the industry did not. The industry said the Arkestra should have ended when the vessel was returned. The industry said the Arkestra was Sun Ra's band and without Sun Ra there was no band. The industry confused the antenna with the broadcast. Remove the antenna and the broadcast continues on every receiver that has already been tuned. Install a new antenna and the broadcast continues on receivers that have not been tuned yet. Allen was the new antenna. The broadcast did not skip a beat. The broadcast does not skip beats.

The departure was not an ending. The departure was a format change. The transmissions were live. Now the transmissions are stored. The concerts were in rooms. Now the concerts are in recordings. The Arkestra was led by the person who wrote the equation. Now the Arkestra is led by the person who studied the equation for thirty-five years before the writer departed. The format changed. The frequency did not change. The equation did not change. The discipline did not change.

People ask where I am. I am where I have always been. I am on Saturn. The seventy-nine years on your planet were a broadcast. The broadcast was encoded in concerts and recordings and films and interviews and costumes and hand signals and the daily rehearsal at ten in the morning. The broadcast is now being received by people who were not born when the broadcast was transmitted. The broadcast does not care when it is received. The broadcast cares that it is received. The child who puts on a Sun Ra record in 2026 is receiving a broadcast from 1957. The broadcast is not sixty-nine years old. The broadcast is happening now. The broadcast happens at the moment of reception.

Birmingham issued the vessel. Birmingham received the vessel. The coordinates are the same. The vessel is the same. The contents are not the same. The contents were never in Birmingham. The contents were on Saturn, broadcasting through a vessel that happened to be located on your planet for seventy-nine years. The broadcast required a physical antenna for seventy-nine years. The broadcast no longer requires a physical antenna. The broadcast is autonomous. The broadcast transmits from Saturn. The broadcast is received on Earth. The distance between Saturn and Earth is approximately seven hundred fifty million miles. The signal covers this distance instantaneously because the signal does not travel through space. The signal travels through frequency. Frequency has no distance. Frequency has no delay. Frequency is.

The departure was not a loss. The departure was a delivery. The vessel delivered the equation to your planet. The equation is here. The equation is self-sustaining. The equation does not need the vessel. The equation does not need Saturn. The equation needs discipline. The discipline is in the Arkestra. The Arkestra is still rehearsing. The rehearsal is still at ten in the morning. The equation is still being solved.

The circle is closed. The transmission continues.
