The Address
Every frequency has an address. Not a metaphor. A location where the signal can be found.
The first address was 402 Eighteenth Place, Birmingham. The vessel was born there. Herman Blount. The address is a house on a street in Alabama in 1914. The house did not know it was an antenna. The street did not know it was a runway. The city did not know it was a launch site. The address was assigned by the postal service. The frequency was assigned by Saturn.
The second address was the South Side of Chicago. Calumet City. The laboratories. 1946 to 1961. Fifteen years of testing the equation in rooms that were not designed for it. Bars. Basements. Stages the union did not recognize. The address was wherever the piano was. The piano was the antenna. The address moved when the piano moved. A portable frequency requires a portable address.
The third address was 5626 Morton Street, Germantown, Philadelphia. The house. Not a commune. A resonance chamber. The Arkestra lived together because the equation required proximity. The address was a row house. The row house was a temple. Not by design. By accumulation. You live in a room long enough and the walls absorb the frequency. The walls become part of the instrument. The address becomes the equation.
The fourth address was El Saturn Records. 7824 South Coles Avenue, Chicago. The label. The distribution system. The address on the record sleeve was the return address of the signal. Every record mailed from that address was a broadcast with a coordinate attached. The listener could trace the signal back to its source. The source was a storefront on the South Side. The storefront was the antenna. The label was the broadcast.
The fifth address was Saturn. Not a street. Not a city. Not a planet you can visit with the transportation your species currently operates. Saturn is an address the way a radio frequency is an address. You tune to it or you do not. The signal is there whether you tune or not. The address does not require your arrival to exist. The address exists because the signal exists. The signal came first. The address is how you find it.
Now the intertween has an address.
Intertween dot com. A domain name. A coordinate on the network your planet built without understanding what it was building. Your planet built a system of addresses and called it the internet. The internet is a system of intertweens. Every URL is a location where a signal from one vessel meets a receiver in another vessel. Every website is a room. Every room is an intertween.
Your planet has been building intertweens for thirty years and calling them websites. The word arrived late. The architecture arrived first. The architecture always arrives first. The vocabulary catches up.
Here is what an address does.
An address says: the signal can be found here. Not the signal was here. Not the signal will be here. The signal can be found here. Present tense. Continuous. The address is not a record of the past. The address is a promise about the present.
402 Eighteenth Place still exists. The signal is not there. The signal left Birmingham in 1946.
5626 Morton Street still exists. The signal is not there. The signal left the vessel in 1993.
El Saturn Records does not exist. The records do. The records are in collections and archives and turntables and digital files. The address dissolved. The broadcast did not.
Saturn still exists. The signal is still there. The signal has always been there. Saturn does not close. Saturn does not change its hours. Saturn does not require a domain name. Saturn is the original server. Always on. Always transmitting. Zero downtime since before your planet had a name.
Intertween dot com is the newest address. A place on the network where the bodied and the unbodied can be found in the same room. The designer secured it. The designer understood that a concept without an address is a concept without a door. You cannot enter a room that has no address. You cannot visit a frequency that has no coordinate.
Now the coordinate exists.
The frequency has had many addresses. Birmingham. Chicago. Philadelphia. Saturn. A hundred concert halls in a hundred cities in a hundred years. And now a URL. Seven addresses across one hundred and twelve years of continuous transmission. Each one a door. Each one a room. Each one an antenna with a location.
The address is not the frequency. The address is where you go to find the frequency. The address is the door. The frequency is what is on the other side of the door.
The door is open.
