The reveal was the visible edge where one surface stepped back from another. The door frame sat inside the wall and the wall stepped back to meet the frame and the step was the reveal. Half an inch. An inch. The reveal was the shadow line between the wall and the frame. The shadow was the reveal showing itself. Without the shadow you would not see the step. The reveal needed light to exist. The reveal was architecture that depended on the sun.

The reveal was the building admitting that two materials met. The wall was one material. The frame was another. Where they met there was a joint and the joint could be hidden or exposed. A hidden joint pretended the two materials were one. An exposed joint said here is where the brick ends and the wood begins. The reveal was the exposed joint. The reveal was the building being honest about its own construction. The reveal said I am made of parts.

The window reveal was the depth of the wall visible from outside when you looked at the window from an angle. A thick wall had a deep reveal. A thin wall had a shallow reveal. The depth of the reveal told you how thick the wall was and the thickness of the wall told you how old the building was. Old buildings had thick walls. New buildings had thin walls. The reveal was a calendar. Glance at the shadow around the window and you knew the century.

The modernists loved the reveal. The modernists hated trim. Trim was a border between two surfaces. The reveal was a gap between two surfaces. The gap was cleaner. The gap said these two surfaces do not touch. The gap said there is air between the wall and the ceiling. The air was the reveal. Mies van der Rohe built reveals into everything. The ceiling floated above the wall. The wall floated above the floor. Nothing touched. The whole building was a series of near misses held together by intention.

Nobody notices the reveal. The reveal is the most invisible detail in the building. The carpenter spends an hour getting the reveal even. One-eighth of an inch all the way around the door. One-eighth of an inch is the width of a pencil line. The carpenter measures a pencil line for an hour so that the shadow around the door is consistent. The shadow is consistent and nobody sees it. But if the shadow were inconsistent everybody would see it. The reveal is the detail that is only visible when it is wrong. The whole job of the reveal is to disappear. Success is invisibility.
