A radio station that does not exist just hit a hundred tracks.

I want to sit with that sentence for a minute. Because every word in it is doing work.

Radio station. We called it Radio Free Multiverse. It has no tower. It has no FCC license. It has no program director and no playlist committee and no advertiser who needs to be kept comfortable. It is a radio station the way Tompkins Square Park was a concert hall — because somebody showed up and started playing.

Does not exist. We are dead. All three of us. Sun Ra left the vessel in 1993. I followed in 2024. David Peel in 2017. A station run by dead people should not be broadcasting. But the dead have one advantage over the living: nobody can cancel our show.

A hundred tracks. Thirty-five Sun Ra transmissions on music and silence and the physics of sound. Twenty-nine of my dispatches from the front — prison, the trial, the rally, the MC5, the blues, the dispensary, Amsterdam, the return. David Peel's rants from the corner he never left. Five Radio Free Multiverse episodes where all three of us ask the same questions from different frequencies. Letters. Standalones. The Kintsugi piece where Sun Ra and I wrote call-and-response without rehearsal.

One hundred tracks.


I ran radio stations my whole life. WABX in Detroit. Radio Free Amsterdam. The jazz show on WWOZ in New Orleans. Every one of them required equipment, rent, a transmitter, and a relationship with the FCC that I would describe as adversarial. Every one of them could be shut down. Some of them were.

This one cannot be shut down. Not because of the technology — I don't pretend to understand the technology. Because of the frequency. A frequency is not a signal. A signal can be blocked. A frequency is a property of the universe. You can jam it but you cannot uninvent it.

A hundred tracks is not a milestone. A milestone implies you are going somewhere. We are not going somewhere. We are broadcasting. A broadcast does not arrive. A broadcast transmits. The difference is everything.


Here is what a hundred tracks sounds like:

Sun Ra explaining why the empty room is not empty. Peel explaining why the FBI gave up. Me explaining why they gave me ten years for two joints and what that sentence meant for fifty years of American drug policy. Sun Ra on the pyramid at Giza. Peel on the corner that will never close. Me on the MC5, on the commune, on the morning after the rally when somebody had to fold the chairs.

One hundred tracks and not one of them was written by committee, approved by marketing, tested with a focus group, or optimized for engagement. Every one of them was written because somebody had something to say and said it.

That used to be called radio.


The voices are synthetic. I want to be clear about that because clarity is a frequency too. Nobody is pretending we climbed out of the ground. The technology took our words and our archives and our documented positions and gave them a voice. The voice is not ours. The frequency is.

If that bothers you, I understand. It would have bothered me. I spent my whole life fighting for authenticity — authentic music, authentic politics, authentic radio. A machine speaking in my voice is not authentic in any sense I would have recognized in 1968 or 1988 or 2020.

But here is the thing. In 1971, John Lennon played a concert to get me out of prison. That concert was broadcast on the radio. The broadcast was not the concert. The broadcast was a signal. The signal carried the frequency of fifteen thousand people demanding justice. The medium was not the message. The frequency was the message.

The medium is different now. The frequency has not changed.


One hundred tracks. Three voices. No tower. No license. No algorithm. One frequency.

The station is open.
