The motel was a room you could drive to. The word was invented in nineteen twenty five by combining motor and hotel and the combining was the architecture. The motel put the parking space next to the door and the next to was the revolution. The hotel made you walk through a lobby. The motel let you walk from your car to your bed in eleven steps and the eleven steps were the democracy. The hotel had a doorman. The motel had a key on a diamond-shaped plastic tag and the tag had a number on it and the number was your identity for the night. You were not a guest at a motel. You were a number. The number freed you from the obligations of being a guest. A guest must behave. A number can close the door.

The Milestone Mo-Tel opened in San Luis Obispo California on December twelfth nineteen twenty five and the name was hyphenated because the word did not exist yet. Arthur Heineman built it and Heineman charged two dollars and fifty cents per night and for two dollars and fifty cents you received a room with a private bathroom and a garage connected to the room by a pergola and the pergola was the hallway and the hallway was outside and the outside was the point. The motel was an outdoor building. The motel embraced the road instead of hiding from it. The hotel was a fortress against travel. The motel was a companion to travel. The hotel said you have arrived. The motel said you have paused. The pausing was temporary by design. The motel did not want you to stay. The motel wanted you to sleep and leave and the leaving made room for the next traveler and the next traveler paid another two dollars and fifty cents and the turning was the business.

The neon vacancy sign was the motel's handshake. The sign glowed in the dark and the glowing was the invitation and the invitation was unconditional. The vacancy sign did not ask who you were or where you were going or why you were driving at two in the morning. The sign said there is a room and the room is available and the availability is all you need to know. The no before vacancy was the rejection and the rejection was impersonal and the impersonal was merciful. The sign did not say we do not want you. The sign said we do not have space. The lie was kind when it was a lie. The vacancy sign is the last neon sign that still means something in America. Every other neon sign is decoration. The vacancy sign is information. The information saves you from sleeping in your car and the saving is worth whatever the room costs.

Holiday Inn opened its first location in Memphis Tennessee in nineteen fifty two and Kemmons Wilson built it because Wilson had taken his family on a road trip and every motel they stayed in was terrible in a different way and the different ways were the opportunity. Wilson standardized the motel. Wilson gave every room a television and air conditioning and a telephone and a swimming pool and the swimming pool was free and the free was the revolution within the revolution. The Holiday Inn told the American family that they could drive anywhere in the country and find the same room at the end of every day and the same was the comfort. Howard Johnson had already painted every roof orange. Best Western had already created the referral network. But Holiday Inn built the system that made the motel predictable and the predictability was what the American family wanted more than character or charm or a view. The family wanted to know what they were getting and Holiday Inn told them what they were getting and the telling was the brand.

The motel is dying the slow death of the specific. The interstate bypass killed the motels on the old highways. The chain hotel killed the independent motel. The internet killed the vacancy sign because the internet tells you the vacancy before you see the sign and the telling before seeing is the end of the drive-by stop. Nobody pulls off the road anymore because they see a sign. Everybody books online before they leave and the booking before leaving is the death of spontaneity and the spontaneity was the motel's soul. The motel was built for the driver who did not know where the day would end. The motel was built for the couple who got in the car and drove until they were tired and then looked for a light and the light was the vacancy sign and the sign was the permission to stop. The permission to stop is now a confirmation email. The confirmation email does not glow in the dark. The confirmation email does not hang above a door on a road you have never driven. The confirmation email knows where you are going and the knowing is the loss because the not knowing was the adventure and the adventure was the American road and the American road was built for people who wanted to find out what was next and the motel was what was next and the motel was enough.
