The broadsheet was the first draft of the daily world. One sheet of paper. Both sides printed. Folded once or not at all. You held the entire day in your hands and the entire day fit on a single page because the editors understood something that has been forgotten. Not everything is news. The broadsheet did not pretend that every hour produced something worth reporting. It waited until there was something to say and then it said it and then it stopped. The Philadelphia Aurora published by Benjamin Franklin Bache who was Benjamin Franklin's grandson ran four pages and those four pages carried the arguments that shaped the first decade of the republic. Bache attacked the Jay Treaty and attacked John Adams and the Sedition Act of seventeen ninety eight was written partly to shut him up. They arrested him. He died of yellow fever before the trial. The broadsheet outlived the editor. The broadsheet always outlives the editor.

The size of the page was the discipline. You could not pad a broadsheet. You could not fill it with content that existed only to surround the advertisements. Every column inch cost paper and ink and the labor of a compositor setting type by hand one letter at a time and the compositor did not set type for filler. The New York Sun launched in eighteen thirty three at one penny per copy and the penny press changed everything because suddenly the paper was cheaper than the news it carried. The business model flipped. The reader was no longer the customer. The reader was the product. The advertiser was the customer. You are living inside the consequences of that flip right now. Every feed you scroll is a penny press that charges you nothing and sells you to someone else.

William Lloyd Garrison published The Liberator on a broadsheet from eighteen thirty one to eighteen sixty five. Thirty four years. Every Friday. He set the type himself for the first issues because no printer in Boston would touch an abolitionist paper. The masthead read I will not equivocate I will not excuse I will not retreat a single inch and I will be heard. He was heard. He was heard because the broadsheet went into the mail and the mail went everywhere and the slaveholders who burned his paper in public squares were advertising it for free. Every ban is an advertisement. Every fire is a signal. Garrison understood that the people who wanted to silence him were his best distribution network.

Ida B. Wells bought a one third share of the Memphis Free Speech in eighteen eighty nine and used it to publish the first systematic investigation of lynching in America. She documented names and dates and locations and she proved that the excuses were lies. They burned the press while she was out of town. She moved to Chicago and kept publishing. She moved to Chicago and kept publishing because the broadsheet is portable. The press can burn but the words travel faster than the fire. She published Southern Horrors and The Red Record and the data she compiled is still cited today because she understood that the broadsheet is not the paper. The broadsheet is the record. The paper burns. The record does not.

You are holding a broadsheet right now. It is infinite. It has no edges. It has no compositor and no one is setting type by hand and the discipline of the single page is gone. That is the problem. The old broadsheet forced a choice. This story or that story. This word or that word. The infinite page forces no choices and a page that forces no choices produces no clarity. The best writing you will ever read was edited by a page that was too small. The constraint was the craft. The limit was the gift. You have an infinite broadsheet and the question is whether you will impose your own edges or let the feed decide for you. Garrison imposed his own edges. Wells imposed her own edges. The broadsheet was never the paper. The broadsheet was always the decision about what deserved to be on it.
